Max Richter Introduces a New Piano Version of ‘SLEEP’ and an Immersive London Event

Published February 2, 2024

Composer Max Richter is bringing a new dimension to his acclaimed 2015 work, 'SLEEP,' by offering a fresh piano arrangement titled 'SLEEP: Piano Edition'. This reinterpreted EP arrives in time for World Sleep Day on March 15, aiming to provide listeners with an intimate daydreaming experience.

Reworking 'SLEEP' for Piano and World Sleep Day

The 'SLEEP: Piano Edition' EP features three extended tracks from the original eight-and-a-half-hour album, tailored for solo piano performances. It also includes short edited versions that will be released as singles, with a Dolby Atmos mix enhancing the listening experience. The first single, 'Dream 0 (piano short edit),' is already available for listening.

In the lead-up to the EP's release, two additional singles, 'Non Eternal' and 'Return 2,' will be revealed on February 12 and March 12, respectively.

Special BFI IMAX London Event

Richter's ‘SLEEP’ will also be at the heart of a unique event at London’s BFI IMAX. Scheduled for March 17, '90 Minutes of SLEEP' is an audio-visual meditation designed for the UK's largest screen with bespoke visuals. This presentation marks the first time 'SLEEP' has been spatially showcased in such a setting. This event will be personally introduced by Richter and tickets are currently on sale.

A Philosophy Behind the Music

Richter discusses the philosophy of 'SLEEP', highlighting the importance of finding a peaceful refuge for one’s mind in today's hyper-connected world. With environmental, social, and political challenges on the rise, he expresses the necessity of having a clear mind and points to 'SLEEP' as a potential avenue for achieving mental rest.

Richter has a history of reexamining his musical pieces, viewing them as evolving works rather than static creations. With the reimagined piano edition, he is offering listeners new perspectives of the 'SLEEP' landscape.

Previously, Richter took a different reinterpretative approach to 'SLEEP' with an electronic-tinged version titled ‘SLEEP: Tranquility Base'. Additionally, he has recently launched an audio workshop called SRM Sounds, in partnership with Studio Richter Mahr.
