Rock the Nation Celebrates Canadian Rock with a Return to Studio Bell

Published January 28, 2024

A spectacular showcase of classic Canadian rock has once again graced Studio Bell at the National Music Centre, bringing with it the powerful echoes of familiar tunes and the pride of Canada’s rich musical heritage. Over the weekend, crowds were thrilled by the event, aptly named Rock the Nation, featuring a lineup of legendary Canadian rock influencers.

Classic Hits Revisited

With a playlist spanning from the iconic riffs of Bachman-Turner Overdrive to the passionate anthems of Bryan Adams, Rock the Nation offers a comprehensive tour through Canada's rock history. This event highlights Canadian rock greatness, from the revolutionary bands of the 60s to the chart-dominating artists of today.

After its initial success about a year ago, the demand for an encore was clear, leading to the show's triumphant return for a three-month encore. 'Canada might be small in the population, but when it comes to music, we are giants,' remarked Scott Henderson, the musical director of Rock the Nation. 'We should be immensely proud of our country’s musical output.'

Spotlight on Local Talent

Rock the Nation is not just about the well-known classics; it’s also a platform for local musicians to shine. Lisette Xavier, one such talent in the band, expressed excitement for the collaborative experience, 'It's quite special to finally work with artists I've admired for years and to learn from them. Their excellence is inspiring.'

The artists and their audience form a unique bond through shared memories associated with the songs, making each performance more than a concert—it's an encounter between hearts and histories.

Unexpected Canadian Hits

The setlist includes sovereign songs like American Woman and Born to Be Wild, yet some tracks come as a delightful revelation to the listeners. 'I had no idea this was Canadian—it's incredible!' explained an amazed concertgoer. Others expressed pride in the lesser-known Canadian songs that have made waves internationally.

The National Music Centre finds Rock the Nation the quintessential expression of Canada's musical narrative, with Stephanie Hutchinson, NMC’s director of programs, stating that Studio Bell is the custodian of the country’s musical saga, thus making the show an ideal embodiment.

The musical celebration will continue every weekend at Studio Bell until the end of April, offering visitors ample opportunity to indulge in Canada’s storied rock legacy.
