Prize Horse’s Debut Album: 'Under Sound' Shakes Up Alt-Rock Scene

Published January 17, 2024

Since the release of their EP Welder back in 2022, the Minneapolis trio known as Prize Horse has garnered attention with their unique blend of grungy, distortion-fueled alt-rock. Vocalist and guitarist Jake Beitel, bassist Olivia Johnson, and drummer Jon Brenner are the talents behind the band. With the upcoming release of their full-length debut album, Under Sound, they're poised to make an even bigger impact.

A Fresh Addition to Shoegaze

The band's first album Under Sound delivers a robust mix of intense breakdowns, poignant lyrics, and commanding guitar work. Tracks like ‘Further From My Start’ and ‘Stone’ tackle themes of isolation and despair, converting them into impactful music through sharp lyrics and hazy melodics, adding a thrilling new dimension to the shoegaze genre.

From Fast Food to Healing Caves: Prize Horse's Unique Experiences

During an intimate Q&A session, Beitel touched on several personal anecdotes, from enjoying an unforgettable meal at Raising Cane’s to the unforgettable experience of sleeping in a cave filled with natural wonders in Rapid City, SD. They've shared stages in cities like Charlotte, NC, and are dreaming of performing in San Diego, CA.

Nourishing the Indie Scene with Inspirations and Memories

The band draws inspiration from the likes of Corey Coffman of Gleemer and envisions a music festival with acts like Sumac and Cloakroom at Minneapolis's iconic First Ave venue. Personal touches, such as Beitel's pinball prowess and a penchant for privacy before going on stage, showcase the band’s offbeat character. When it comes down to the future of their music, Prize Horse hopes it will be remembered for the emotional connections it forges.

Commitment to Social Causes and Authentic Music

While embracing a passion for music, the group is also focused on humanitarian issues, expressing a desire to support organizations working towards relief in Palestine. Skeptical about AI's role in music, they firmly believe it can't replace the authentic emotional expression found in human-created music.

Their first full-length album, Under Sound, is a testament to Prize Horse's dynamic sound and artistic vision, indicating a promising journey ahead for the band in the alternative rock landscape.
