Kenyan Musicians Start Receiving 2023 Royalty Payments from MCSK

Published January 26, 2024

Starting Thursday, Kenyan musicians have begun to receive their 2023 royalty payments, acknowledging their contribution to the music industry over the past year. The payments have been facilitated by the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK), an organization dedicated to ensuring artists are rewarded for the use of their work.

Government Support for Musical Talents

During the MCSK royalty distribution event at a Nairobi hotel, First Lady Rachel Ruto emphasized the Kenyan government's dedication to supporting the nation's musicians. She articulated the government's intention to ensure that the creators of music see tangible benefits from their artistry.

Artists who have made significant impacts in the industry were honored by the First Lady, who handed out cheques to the most successful among them.

Recognizing Diversity in the Music Scene

The MCSK took a comprehensive approach by awarding musicians across five categories, which included legends, upcoming talent, artists with disabilities, and top gospel and secular artists on a national level. This inclusive recognition showcases the vibrant diversity of the Kenyan music scene.

Innovative Royalty Distribution System

Ezekiel Mutua, the Chief Executive of MCSK, shed light on the revamped royalty distribution system. The organization has committed a significant sum – at least 20 million shillings – to be distributed among its 16,000 members. With the aid of a sophisticated software program, they now have the means to track song airplay and ensure fair compensation.

Mutua also encouraged compliance among music consumers to guarantee that artists are adequately compensated for their creative output, sustaining the industry and protecting artists' rights.
