The Last Dinner Party Hits Number One with Debut Album

Published February 9, 2024

The indie rock sensation, The Last Dinner Party, has clinched the number one spot on the UK album charts with their first ever release, Prelude To Ecstasy, triumphing over established artists such as Taylor Swift, Noah Kahan, and The Weeknd.

Fresh off their win for the BBC Sound of 2024, the five-member group, known for their dynamic live performances and baroque pop anthems, have experienced a rapid rise to fame. Comprised of Emily Roberts, Abigail Morris, Aurora Nishevci, Georgia Davies, and Lizzie Mayland, the band expressed their astonishment with a one-word expletive-laden statement in reaction to their surge to the top of the charts—a remark that was deemed too explicit for BBC publication.

With the help of producer James Ford, known for working with Arctic Monkeys and Blur, and released by Island Records, their debut album sold an impressive 14,000 copies on vinyl in the first week. This achievement marks the largest weekly vinyl album sales since Oasis's The Masterplan reissue.

Abigail Morris recently reflected on their whirlwind success on BBC Breakfast, emphasizing the value of sharing the journey as a band rather than navigating it solo. The Last Dinner Party is set to collect the Brits rising star award at the O2 Arena soon, adding to their list of accolades after memorable performances at Glastonbury and touring with names like Hozier and Florence + The Machine.

In other chart news, Jamie Webster's 10 For The People reached a personal best at number two, while Taylor Swift witnessed a chart resurgence following her recent Grammy win, with several albums reappearing in the top 40.
