Boston Band Neighbor Engages with Fans Through In-Van Album Sessions

Published February 17, 2024

The Boston-based band Neighbor has taken fan engagement to a new level with their self-titled debut album. Known for their innovative strategies to connect with fans, the foursome has now created an intimate musical experience stemming from one of their songs, 'Trippin’ in a Van'. Richard James, the band’s frontman who adeptly juggles roles as the singer, songwriter, and keyboardist, decided to get up close and personal with their supporters by inviting them into the band's van where they could listen to the album and engage with him directly.

Fan-Driven Musical Journey

During these unique encounters inside the van, fans had the opportunity to converse freely with James while the 'Neighbor' LP played. Through the act of sharing music and thoughts, James found that the album took on a narrative arc which he described as a metaphor for life. The progression from the naive sentiments of the opening track 'Take Me Alive' to the matured perspectives evident in later songs was not premeditated, highlighting the organic growth that the album and the band have experienced.

Improvisation and Growth

The band, made up of Richard James, guitar virtuoso Lyle Brewer, bass player Dan Kelly, and drummer Dean Johnston, is well-versed in improvisation and evolution. Neighbor's path on the jam band scene saw them mix structured performance with spontaneous creativity. This dual approach bore fruit during a pivotal weekly residency at the now closed Thunder Road in Somerville five years ago. There, the band solidified their chemistry and sound, often presenting fresh songs that had been written mere hours before a performance.

Even as live music faced the challenges of a global pandemic, Neighbor adapted by hosting virtual shows from Soundcheck Studios, expanding their fan reach across the country. With a current touring schedule that spans from New England to the Rockies and all the way to Tennessee, they've maintained and grown a devoted fan base. Brewer believes the connection with their fans makes their shows more meaningful, stating that moments that resonate with the band often resonate equally with fans.

The Community Connection

Both Brewer and James acknowledge unique aspects of Neighbor – from James’ compelling lyrics to Brewer's skillful lead in improvisations – yet they agree it's the fans that drive much of their energy. Whether through in-person or virtual performances, or unusual listening sessions in a van, their engagement with the audience remains core to their artistry and approach to music.
