OKC Thunder Champions Local Art with Fresh Take Poster Series

Published February 13, 2024

The Oklahoma City Thunder has a history of fostering creativity within the local community by supporting artists and their works. Taking this commitment a step further, they have launched a poster series to cast a spotlight on the talent in Oklahoma City. This effort not only celebrates the artists but also offers fans a unique memento to cherish their city's culture.

Fresh Paint by OKC Thunder

One of the most significant contributions by the Thunder to the arts scene is the "Fresh Paints" mural competition aimed at young artists. This initiative has been part of the Arts Council Oklahoma City's New Year's Eve Opening Night event for several years, showcasing future generations of creativity.

Spotlight on Local Talent

Artist Yovany Avendano, also known as "VNICE", was featured during a recent Thunder game where attendees received posters of his piece, "The Game Plan Essentials." Avendano's journey, from Oaxaca, Mexico to the United States as a DACA recipient, is as inspirational as his diverse artistic talents which range from mural painting to digital creation. His passion for art resonates with the city's spirit that the Thunder aims to highlight through these events.

Community Engagement and Celebrations

The Thunder's "City Nights" initiative is about more than basketball; it's a celebration of Oklahoma City's essence, embracing different forms of art from painting to music, and even culinary arts. With Michelob Ultra's collaboration, the team is set to feature more local artists in upcoming City Night games. This engagement represents a broader effort to intertwine the sense of community with the Thunder basketball experience.

Encouraging Young Creatives

The arts scene in Oklahoma City is vibrant, not least due to opportunities like the Arts Council Oklahoma City's Youth Art Sale which invites young artists to showcase and sell their works. This event not only gives these talented individuals a platform but also allows them to benefit directly from their artistry.

A Touch of Opera

The local scene is also enriched by productions such as Oklahoma City University's take on "The Merry Wives of Windsor," set in the disco era. With a substantial cast and orchestra, the opera exemplifies the depth and variety of cultural experiences available in the city.
