Big Bands Triumph at the 2024 Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival

Published February 13, 2024

The 2024 edition of the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival is set to deliver an extraordinary experience with its declaration of this year being the 'Year of the Big Band.' The festival, known for its dynamic programming, has scheduled a lineup that includes an impressive roster of 10 big bands ready to perform on the Ronnie Wells Main Stage at the Hilton Rockville from February 16 to February 18.

Big Bands: The Heart of Jazz Festival

Every year, the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival (MAJF) aligns itself with a specific theme, and for its 15th anniversary, it’s all about celebrating the rich history and evolution of big bands, as envisioned by festival director Paul Carr. Big bands typically feature 12 or more musicians and are divided into reed, brass, and rhythm sections, bringing a powerful sound and unique energy to the stage.

The festival not only showcases professional ensembles but also emphasizes the talent of college-student big bands, which make up the majority of this year’s acts. Attending guests can anticipate polished performances, innovative arrangements, and standout solos that often leave audiences in awe.

Star-Studded Collaborations

College ensembles, such as the University of Maryland Jazz Ensemble and the Boston College Jazz Ensemble, are set to collaborate with famed musicians like Orrin Evans and Warren Wolf. These partnerships bridge the gap between established jazz icons and the emerging talent of the student musicians.

There's also a thrilling crossover with artists like Evans, who not only performs with a student group but also leads his Captain Black Big Band, known for its blend of disciplined ensemble work and spirited improvisations. Similarly, trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis will perform both with a student ensemble and his Uptown Jazz Orchestra.

The Festival's Finale: A Jazz Maestro Takes Center Stage

Paul Carr’s own group, the Mid Atlantic Jazz Orchestra, comprises regional jazz luminaries and is set to be one of the highlight performances of the festival. Moreover, the event will culminate with a show by the legendary vocalist Kurt Elling, known for his skillful vocalese and scat singing abilities, promising a grand closing to an already exciting festival.

In addition to the main stage acts, there will be a plethora of local talent spread across the festival, including rising stars, established vocalists, and instrumental virtuosos, offering a diverse array of jazz styles for attendees to enjoy.

The purpose of this detailed preview is not merely to inform, but to extend an invitation to all jazz enthusiasts to experience the array of performances the festival has to offer, and to enjoy the immersive atmosphere of live big band jazz.
