DC9 Nightclub Hits 20 Years as a Beacon in DC's Music Scene

Published February 7, 2024

Recent years have been tough for music venues in DC. With the pandemic at its peak in 2020, many beloved spots like U Street Music Hall were forced to close. Velvet Lounge and Dodge City also shut down less than a year thereafter, and just a month ago, the Runaway nearly went under. Recovering post-pandemic has been a steep challenge for those venues that anchor the local music community.

A Milestone Amidst the Struggle

Despite the struggles, DC9, a bar and music venue located on 9th Street NW, is hitting a significant milestone on February 13 – its 20th anniversary. Not one to rest on its laurels, DC9 has planned a series of four concerts to take place from February 9 to February 13, celebrating its 'past, present, and future'. Acts gracing the stage include the Loud Boyz and Margaret Glaspy, with future star Snail Mail also set to perform.

The Origins and Growth of DC9

DC9's journey began in 2004 when Bill Spieler, inspired by his time at the now-closed venue 15 Minutes, decided to venture into his own music space. Over the years, the venue has expanded from a simple bar to include a kitchen and rooftop deck. It has become just as well known for its live music as for its burgers, while hosting local and international talents like Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Matt DeMarco.

Bill Spieler and Amber Bursik, who is also DC9's cook, have long viewed their creation as a neighborhood bar with a musical twist. And although it was a tough journey, especially with the pandemic forcing them to shut doors at one point, their survival can be largely credited to patronage and a steadfast staff.

The Venue's Contribution to Music Careers

DC9 has played an instrumental role in numerous music careers, providing both a stepping stone for local acts and a proving ground for future stars. Icons in the making, like the 1975, found early audiences at DC9. The venue values the experiences it offers to audience members and artists alike, with intimate performances characterizing its identity.

Artists recall the venue's intimacy and top-notch acoustics as key to creating memorable shows. Up-and-coming bands like Birthday Girl, who will open for Snail Mail at the anniversary event, treasure the close contact with fans that only a space like DC9 can provide.

Celebrating Two Decades of Music and Community

The 20th-anniversary shows are not only a showcase of talent but also a nod to the venue's enduring legacy and its future prospects. As they look back on 20 years of trials, triumphs, and unforgettable performances, the proprietors of DC9 look forward to continuing to create and host life-changing experiences for visitors and artists alike.
