Tennessee Proposes ELVIS Act to Shield Musicians From Unauthorized AI Use

In Tennessee, lawmakers are addressing the increasingly intertwined relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and the music industry by proposing new regulations.

Introducing the ELVIS Act

The Tennessee General Assembly is considering a bill named the Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security, or ELVIS ACT. If enacted, it would offer new protections for musical artists concerned about the unauthorized use of their name, image, and likeness by AI technologies.

Strengthening Existing Protections

This legislation aims to enhance existing Tennessee laws which already safeguard individuals from having their likeness used without consent. The ELVIS Act specifically targets the exploitation of artists by AI.

Governor's Support for Artist Protections

Governor Bill Lee emphasized the need for updated regulations in the face of evolving technology. He cautioned that while AI can be advantageous when properly utilized, it also has the potential to undermine an artist's career if their rights are not adequately protected.

Parallel Federal Efforts

Simultaneously, federal lawmakers have introduced the No AI Fraud Act, echoing similar concerns at the national level and seeking to provide broader protections for artists against AI misuse.
