Aigul Akhmetshina: From a Small Village to the Grand Stage of the Met Opera

Published December 27, 2023

Despite describing herself as an 'ordinary girl,' Aigul Akhmetshina's tale is anything but common. Hailing from a remote Russian village, Akhmetshina's musical journey began early as she performed folk songs from Bashkortostan as a toddler. The financial constraints at home meant she couldn't practice on a piano, so she mastered the button accordion instead. From there, her passion for music saw her leaving her family at just 14, moving over 100 miles away to Ufa to study singing. There, she took on various jobs, including walking on stilts whilst distributing flyers, to support her studies.

Overcoming Obstacles

Akhmetshina's path to success was fraught with challenges. She faced setbacks ranging from competition failures to a car accident that affected her ability to sing for several months. Despite being rejected by a conservatory in Moscow for a scholarship, Akhmetshina's resolve remained unshaken, bolstered by the belief her mentors and friends had in her talent and potential.

Breakthrough and Breakout

The turning point in Akhmetshina's career came when she won over audiences with her performance as Carmen in the Royal Opera's youth program. Her portrayal was lauded for its sultry and spirited energy, marking her as perfect for the role. Now at 27, Akhmetshina is set to headline 'Carmen' at the Metropolitan Opera, bringing her unique interpretation to a role that resonates with her personal story of determination and perseverance.

New Perspectives in a Classic Role

In the Met's new production, the character of Carmen is presented against the backdrop of a post-industrial America. This fresh take presents Carmen as a worker in a munitions factory, signifying the production's more contemporary social reflections. The role, demanding both vocal prowess and intense acting, seems tailor-made for Akhmetshina, mirroring her own life's fights and triumphs.

A Star on the Rise

With a voice described as 'rich and gorgeous' by the Met's general manager, Akhmetshina's stardom is ascending. Her future at the Met seems secure with roles lined up in upcoming seasons, indicating her potential to tackle some of opera's most challenging mezzo-soprano roles.
