Arnn Elementary Students Transform Into Historical Icons

Published December 27, 2023

In the Sagamihara Family Housing Area of Japan, Mason Thomas, an Arnn Elementary School student, channeled the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Elvis Presley, with a slick pompadour and lively leg movements reminiscent of the iconic star's dance style. During a dynamic living wax museum event at the school, Mason, who has developed a keen interest in Elvis' legacy, showcased his newfound dance skills, and emulated Elvis' famed look, complete with a black-dyed pompadour and a 'Jailhouse Rock' inspired ensemble.

Bringing History to Life

More than 60 fourth-grade students joined Mason to present their favorite historical figures to an audience of peers and parents. Jami LeFebre, along with other fourth-grade teachers, initiated this interactive educational event to provide a unique way for their students to engage with history. Now in its third year, the project expanded to embrace a wider array of influential personalities from different cultures, with detailed display boards enhancing the experience.

Interactive Historical Presentations

The cafeteria transformed into a time capsule with students dressed as prominent change makers—athletes, artists, authors, inventors, politicians, and royalty, among others. Each participant researched their chosen figure intensively since January, culminating in a first-person presentation supported by visual aids.

Student Tyler Paul became Dr. Seuss for the day, complete with a cotton ball beard and a collection of 50 Seuss books, including his beloved 'Green Eggs and Ham.' Hailey Martin, on the other hand, reimagined herself as Marie Antoinette, adorned in a large paper wig and pearl necklaces, ready to teach visitors about the extravagant life of the French queen.

A Lesson Beyond The Classroom

Children and adults alike not only got an entertainment-filled history lesson but also learned about overcoming obstacles and pursuing dreams, as narrated through the lives of the historic figures. Mason stressed how Elvis Presley's humble beginnings and the challenges he faced didn't stop him from ascending to music royalty, embodying the 'anything is possible' spirit.

This event exemplified the importance of looking beyond our present time, recognizing the achievements and advancements throughout history, and the impact these stories can have on inspiring young minds.
