Gordon Goodwin and Big Phat Band to Hold Benefit Concert for Local School Music Programs

Published March 8, 2024

Gordon Goodwin, an esteemed graduate of Bonita High School and a Grammy-winning jazz composer, will revisit his roots to uplift budding musicians. He is set to perform with his acclaimed Big Phat Band on March 16, gracing the stage at the Bonita Center for the Arts. This event isn't just a homecoming; it's a concerted effort to bolster the music programs within the Bonita Unified School District.

The evening promises to be a dazzling display of talent, showcasing young musicians from the district's All-District Jazz Ensemble. These bright performers hail from both Bonita High School and San Dimas High School jazz ensembles, and they'll get the extraordinary opportunity to share the stage with Goodwin in part of the concert. After this thrilling collaboration, Goodwin and his Big Phat Band will deliver a full concert experience to the delight of attendees.

Marking a poignant moment of the event, a special tribute will be paid to Robin Snyder—Bonita High School's late band director who paved the way for jazz education in high schools and was a key influence in Goodwin's musical journey. Snyder's impact was such that even with his passing in January at 98, his legacy continues to inspire.

Gordon Goodwin is not only a performer but a multifaceted artist—a saxophonist, keyboardist, composer, and bandleader—who has left his mark in the music industry. Since founding Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band in the year 2000, he has also contributed significantly to the film industry, earning a Grammy for his exceptional arrangements on 'The Incredibles.'

The evening commences at 6 p.m. with the doors opening to welcome patrons. The All-District Jazz Ensemble will begin their performance at 7 p.m., setting the tempo for what's to come. Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band will then take over at 7:30 p.m., promising an unforgettable night of music and community spirit.

The Bonita Center for the Arts, located at 822 W. Covina Blvd. in San Dimas, is where this musical treat will unfold. Those interested in attending can secure their tickets by visiting the official ticketing website for the Bonita Center for the Arts.
