MGMT Unveils 'Nothing To Declare' From Their Upcoming Album 'Loss Of Life'

Published January 10, 2024

MGMT fans are in for a treat as the band has released their captivating new single titled 'Nothing To Declare'. This track is not just another addition to their playlist, but it also serves as a preview of their much-anticipated album, 'Loss Of Life', slated for release on February 23.

A Glimpse into the Enchanting Single

The song showcases MGMT's signature sombre tone and offers listeners a quiet yet thought-provoking experience. Accompanying the single is a striking music video, directed by Joey Frank, featuring Inga Petry. She is known for her influential presence on social media, particularly TikTok, where she advocates for the disabled community. Born with upper limb aplasia, Inga embodies a character travelling from Pittsburgh to Paris, eventually reaching the famous Venus de Milo sculpture at the Louvre.

In the chorus, frontman Andrew VanWyngarden's voice carries the lyrics with depth and emotion, creating a layered and introspective piece. 'If I'm worlds away, I'm holding mountains in my hands/ Starlight ain't never gonna let me down/ Until I stumble like a drunkard back to town.' These words resonate with the song's serene and contemplative vibe.

About the Music Video and Its Star

The video's narrative follows Petry's serene journey, reflecting an aesthetic reminiscent of the 1990s European independent cinema. Frank explains that the concept for the video emerged after seeing Inga on TikTok and envisioning her in a foreign film. Petry herself resonates deeply with her character in the video, drawing parallels between her life and the armless Venus de Milo, noting the silent strength and unwavering worth that both she and the sculpture convey without the need to declare anything.

Anticipation for 'Loss Of Life'

As the first album release from MGMT in almost six years, fans are eagerly awaiting the full 'Loss Of Life' experience. Produced by VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser alongside Patrick Wimberly, and mixed by long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann, the album boasts a significant roster of collaborators. Notably, Christine and the Queens appears on the track 'Dancing in Babylon', marking the first-ever feature on an MGMT album, while Brian Burton (Danger Mouse) contributed additional production on 'Mother Nature'.

The tracklist further hints at the thematic and musical diversity that has long been characteristic of MGMT, promising a blend of new experiences for listeners. Fans can pre-order the album and indulge in the eclectic tapestry of sounds that the band has meticulously woven.
