Pearl Jam Energizes Fans with New Punk-Influenced Single 'Running'

Published March 22, 2024

The iconic rock band Pearl Jam is back with a new punk-inspired single titled 'Running', a prelude to their forthcoming 12th studio album, 'Dark Matter'. This latest release introduces fans to a dynamic sound that combines deep bass lines, engaging guitar riffs, and pounding drum beats, punctuated by an intense guitar solo. Lead vocalist Eddie Vedder captivates with his lyrics, singing lines like, “Living in the shadows, crossing my fingers / A date with the gallows and a reprieve not looking likely”.

Behind the Music

'Running' emerged from the musical creativity of bassist Jeff Ament. As described by lead guitarist Stone Gossard during an interview, Ament drafted the main riffs, and then the band collectively refined the song. Gossard expressed his admiration for the song's bridge, finding the chords played by guitarist Mike McCready both original and intriguing. The track was also one of the last ones they worked on with producer Andrew Watt, and Gossard noted the fun they experienced in creating this uptempo song, with Vedder showcasing his impressive vocal range.

Album Release and Special Vinyl Editions

As the second single released from Dark Matter, 'Running' follows the album's lead single. The album is set to launch on April 19 but can be pre-ordered now. To honor independent vinyl shops, Pearl Jam has crafted a selection of limited galactic color vinyl variants of the album, which will be exclusively available at select indie stores.
