Boygenius Collaborates with Gretsch to Create a Signature Guitar

Published January 25, 2024

The indie rock supergroup Boygenius, made up of artists Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker, has recently sparked excitement among fans with a teaser of their own custom-designed guitar made in collaboration with the legendary musical instrument company, Gretsch.

Teaser Reveals Custom Guitar Details

On January 25, Boygenius shared a glimpse of their upcoming project with Gretsch on their official Instagram page. The revealed image showcases the neck of the guitar with hands of each member on it and highlights the three of cups symbol on the fretboard, which is a nod to the group's matching tattoos.

Gretsch reciprocated by posting an image showcasing the back of the guitar's neck, which features the band’s name. Despite the excitement around the reveal, specific details such as the guitar’s features, price, or release date are still under wraps.

A Continued Partnership with Gretsch

Bridgers is known for her affinity for Gretsch guitars, having played a Gretsch G9520E Gin Rickey w/ Soundhole pickup on tour and in her solo acts. Dacus, however, is most recognized for frequently using a range of Gretsch models on stage, like the Gretsch G6136T White Falcon Electric Guitar and the G6128T George Harrison Duo Jet.

Boygenius isn't the first to collaborate with Gretsch for a custom instrument. The company has a history of crafting signature guitars for various esteemed musicians across genres.

The Future of Boygenius

Beyond their collaboration with Gretsch, Boygenius has expressed their views on potentially crafting another album. The band cherishes the fluid and somewhat spontaneous nature of their collaboration, preferring to keep the future a surprise and something sacred.

Since their formation, Boygenius has been celebrated for their collective sound which meshes each member’s unique artistry, exemplified in their critically acclaimed album ‘The Record’ and their subsequent EP ‘The Rest’.

Adding to their intriguing anecdotes, the band also shared an amusing story about Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters who, after befriending Bridgers, was slated to feature on their album but missed the session. However, they had the chance to perform with him at a concert, which stands as a memorable highlight for the band.
