Katikati Twilight Concerts Conclude Successfully Despite Weather Delay
The finale of the Katikati Twilight Concerts series brought back the groovy tunes of the 60s and 70s to the delight of classic rock fans. The anticipated performance, featuring The Backbeats with their special programs 'The Woodstock Generation' and 'That 70s Show', took audiences on a nostalgic trip to the era of the legendary Woodstock festival.
Originally scheduled for a Saturday night, the event faced a weather-induced hiccup when thunderstorms and heavy rain were predicted. Quick and efficient planning by the organisers allowed the concert to be moved to Sunday, ensuring the safety of attendees and performers alike.
The rescheduling didn't dampen spirits as the seven-piece band The Backbeats delivered a dynamic performance that got a sizeable crowd of about 750 people dancing. Fans embraced the theme, with many dressing in period costumes, adding to the festive atmosphere and earning prizes for their efforts.
The event kicked off with some local talent as Katikati College students Manase Uilou, Summer Toucher, and Tia Maraea Brown opened the show with impressive vocal performances. This showcase of young talent underscored the community aspect of the event.
In a statement of relief and pride, the concert organisers expressed happiness over managing to hold all three planned concerts for the year. This was a marked improvement from the previous year which saw some cancellations. The successful concerts included a New Zealand Eagles Tribute and a Country Rock evening featuring Brendon Ham and Marian Burns.
The songs selected by The Backbeats spanned hits from Woodstock '69 from artists like Santana, Janis Joplin, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, right through to 70s classics from bands such as Steely Dan, The Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd among others, creating a true classic rock homage.
