Captain Rock and 70 Indie Acts Usher In The Largest Kyungrockjeol Music Festival

Published January 28, 2024

South Korea's vibrant indie rock scene comes to life at Kyungrockjeol, one of the nation's most anticipated annual indie music festivals. Set to commence this Tuesday, the 2024 festival is expected to be its grandest scale yet, labelled 'Rock and Roll Paradise'.

A Birthday Party Turned Indie Rock Staple

Having its modest beginnings in 2005 as a celebratory jam for Han Kyung-rok, Crying Nut's bassist, Kyungrockjeol rapidly transformed into an iconic event. This beloved festival stands tall among Seoul's indie district Hongdae's major events, rivalling Christmas Eve and Halloween celebrations.

Adaptation and Recognition Amidst a Pandemic

With the pandemic forcing many events to go digital, Kyungrockjeol adapted by hosting virtual festivals for two consecutive years, providing a platform for artists and solace for audiences amid the uncertainty. This effort was honored with a special commendation at the Korean Music Awards in 2022.

Expansion Beyond Music

Last year saw the festival broaden its horizons, incorporating academic lectures and exhibitions into its roster, paralleling live performances in the Mapo Renaissance initiative.

Setting the 2024 Stage

This year’s lineup is impressive, with around 70 indie acts slated to perform at the event. Paradise City Plaza on Yeongjongdo in Incheon will host the performances from early afternoon, featuring renowned groups and musicians like Crying Nut and Ubare.

Evening sessions will see bands such as No Brain rocking out at the Paradise City Hotel's Live Music Lounge Bar Rubik, with free entry and live recordings set to air on Crying Nut's YouTube channel.

Online Reach and Networking Opportunities

Fifty artists and groups will take virtual stages the following weekend, marking the fourth year of Kyungrockjeol's successful online presence. Musina Garage in Hongdae is scheduled to celebrate its first anniversary with a bash, followed by a networking event for industry figures.

Cheers to Indie Music

In true Kyungrockjeol spirit, attendees can enjoy the festival's signature craft beer while relishing the performances. To wrap up, the festival promises a treat to all adult guests with free microbrews, keeping the tradition of communal cheer alive.
