AR Rahman and All-Female Orchestra Honor UAE Founding Father with Healing Melodies

Published December 5, 2023

Commemorating UAE Union Day with a heartfelt gesture, esteemed composer AR Rahman joined forces with the remarkable 52-strong, all-female Firdaus Orchestra to pay homage to the country's Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The tribute took place within the walls of an Abu Dhabi hospital, blending music and history in a memorable event.

Music That Inspires

The Firdaus Orchestra, composed entirely of women and led by conductor Monica Woodman, began the evening's performance with the national anthem 'Ishy Bilady', creating a poignant scene. Their arrangement was timed perfectly with a sizeable glass pendulum swaying in the atrium. As the pendulum swung, it etched a portrait of Sheikh Zayed, adding a visual dimension to the auditory celebration.

A Symphony for the Soul

After the emotional rendition of the anthem, the ensemble continued to captivate onlookers. The musicians, located across two levels of the hospital, delivered an array of harmonious selections. The bespoke playlist featured pieces such as Danse, Baroque Flamenco, Ouarzazate, Ecstasy of Gold, and Spirit of Rangeela, among others.

A Song of Hope

AR Rahman also took this opportunity to announce a forthcoming track. This collaboration with Burjeel Holdings is to be a song of hope for the UAE, a tribute to the selfless workers and a beacon of peace and joy in trying times. As the concert concluded, the golden portrait of Sheikh Zayed shone brightly, complete and resplendent.

Honoring Heroes

Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, the visionary behind Burjeel Holdings, reflected on the evening with gratitude toward the country's leadership and acknowledged the brave actions of healthcare workers and others during the Covid-19 pandemic. He emphasized the collective strength and remembrance of the sacrifices made by the nation's heroes and martyrs.
