Anticipation Builds for Lim Yunchan's Debut Album Following Previews

Published February 25, 2024

The classical music world is eagerly awaiting the release of Lim Yunchan's debut album on Decca Records, as the young pianist has already showcased his exceptional talent during previous performances. At just 19 years of age, Yunchan, the record breaker for being the youngest ever to clinch the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, gave audiences a taste of his prowess by playing three Chopin Etudes at the press conference for Apple Music Classical on January 29. His renditions of 'Aeolian Harp' Op. 25, No. 1, 'Black Keys' Op. 10, No. 5, and 'Winter Wind' Op. 25, No. 11, left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to witness.

Exclusive Classical Selections

Diving into the realm of classical music streaming, Yunchan introduced his playlist exclusively on the Apple Music Classical app. This collection not only includes the Chopin 12 Etudes interpreted by Ignaz Friedman, but it also reflects Yunchan’s musical inspirations like Dinu Lipatti's performances of Schubert, Art Tatum's take on Dvorak’s 'Humoresques', among others. Titled 'The Golden Age of Piano', the playlist showcases the depth of Yunchan’s appreciation for legendary performances.

Album Preview at Carnegie Hall

Yunchan's debut at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in Manhattan was nothing short of spectacular. The pianist mesmerized the audience with his performance of all 27 Chopin etudes, evoking considerable praise and inspiring multiple encores. These remarkable performances were in fact sneak peeks into what can be expected from his debut album, 'Yunchan Lim: Chopin Etudes', scheduled for release on April 19.

Further heightening anticipation, Decca Classical released the single 'Tristesse' Op. 10 No. 3 ahead of the album's launch—an album that will feature a total of 24 tracks and is part of an exclusive recording deal Yunchan signed with Decca in the previous year.

Homage to the Masters

Speaking about his debut release, Yunchan acknowledged the influence of piano masters such as Alfred Cortot and Ignaz Friedman. He expressed a desire to honor their legacy with his interpretation of the Chopin Etudes, which he considers to be charged with a multitude of emotions that have long resonated with him. Releasing this work under the renowned Decca label is a distinguished honor for Lim.

The album not only showcases Yunchan's talent but also pays tribute to the golden era of Decca pianists from the 1960s. It's packaged with film-shot photographs and the classic Decca vinyl logo from the time.

Two album versions are set to be released—a limited edition fan pack now sold out in Korea, and a regular edition for broader distribution.

A Nationwide Recital Tour

Following his Decca debut, Yunchan will begin a nationwide recital tour in June, starting in Seoul and spanning various cities. Audiences across South Korea will have the opportunity to experience Yunchan's interpretation of the Chopin Etudes live, concluding with a final performance in the capital at the Seoul Arts Center.
