A Journey through the Roots and Rhythms of Jazz in Mijas

Published February 24, 2024

A dynamic narrative event set to unfold on Friday, March 1 at 8pm at the Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas, Mijas, will bring together a stellar ensemble of thirty musicians and a narrator to convey the storied history of jazz. Juan Carlos Maldonado, the Mijas Councillor for Culture, emphasized the unique chance for families to engage with jazz music, stating, "this initiative gives us the opportunity to discover this genre as a family in a dynamic way with a cast of exceptional musicians."

Interactive Jazz History Concert

The collaborative efforts of the Málaga Provincial Council and Mijas Town Hall are set to deliver an immersive and educational musical experience. José Santaolalla noted that the program is "a fun and exciting musical show that also teaches the audience about jazz," underscoring the enduring influence of the genre. Due to the outstanding success in the previous season, the show continues to tour, with Mijas as its opening venue in 2024.

Led by Renowned Musician, Tete Leal

At the helm of the evening's presentation is Tete Leal, musician, composer, and founder of the Centro de Artes y Música Moderna de Málaga (ELCAMM). Leal will take the audience on a musical voyage, pinpointing the varied influences that have shaped jazz over the decades. Classics such as ‘Sing, Sing, Sing!’, ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’, and ‘In the Mood’ will echo through the theatre, creating a bridge across generations.

Cultural Tapestry of Jazz

The production will transcend a traditional concert format, involving the audience in a mock television report destined to traverse the globe in search of jazz’s myriad musical inspirations. The narrative weaves from the African rhythms and spirituals of cotton fields to the early 20th century melodies of New Orleans, and onto the famed tunes from Hollywood's golden era. This endeavor not only celebrates the genre's musical excellence but also its cultural impact.

A Cast of Talents

The event boasts an intricate lineup that includes a gospel vocal choir, a mini big band, several actors, and a narrator, all dedicated to enhancing the audience's live music experience. The concert aims to stimulate the enjoyment and appreciation of jazz through an interactive, family-friendly performance. Adding to the allure, the admission to this captivating journey through jazz is free of charge.
