Sam Evian Dives into New Sounds with 'Plunge' on His Fourth Studio Album

Published March 20, 2024

The refreshing ritual of taking a cold dive to commence the New Year inspired indie musician Sam Evian. Just as the balls dropped on New Year's Eve 2022, Sam and a few friends faced the chill of a snow-laden Catskills night, plunging into a freezing creek. This bold action not only symbolized a fresh beginning but also set the stage for his upcoming fourth studio album title, 'Plunge', which is being proudly released under his own label, Flying Cloud Recordings.

Sam Evian is not a newcomer to the music scene. He has been diligently crafting songs, engineering sound, and producing records for years. Now with three albums already to his credit, he's brought together a talented group of musical cohorts such as Adrianne Lenker, Sufjan Stevens, and Ellen Kempner to collaborate on 'Plunge'. The friends carved out a ten-day creative window at his Catskills studio. The fruits of their labor manifested as a collection of nine tracks, richly textured and laden with emotions, centering around the complications of relationships.

In an intimate Q&A session, Evian shared his perspectives on various topics ranging from his music, which he describes in four words—waves, circles, earth, heart—to his views on what makes the Red Bull F1 team exceptional. Discussing his roots, he credits his parents for his deepest inspirations, who have ingrained life and music within him. When queried about the future, Sam hopes his music will still resonate with people for years to come, rather than merely being remembered.

Sam relayed tales of his most unforgettable meal—a cherished recipe for 'zuppa di pollo' from his mother's kitchen—and the most impactful concert he's ever attended, featuring Pharaoh Sanders. He openly shared the highs and lows of life advice he would impart to his younger self, and even his hidden talent for making fresh pasta. Not just a creator but also a giver, if bestowed with a million dollars, Evian would support Palestinian children's relief.

Hypothetical scenarios revealed his concerns about AI, his dream music festival lineup, and the desire for a Mediterranean island getaway with his hardworking friends. Sam's affectionate recollection of his first tattoo, acquired in honor of his friend Carlos who saved him from drowning, adds a personal touch to his storytelling.

As 'Plunge' prepares for its release, it's clear Sam Evian is set to make ripples in the indie music scene, drawing from life experiences, personal connections, and soulful introspection for his craft.
