Johnny Drummer: A Lifelong Journey with the Blues and Keytar

Published January 4, 2024

Known as Johnny Drummer, Thessex Johns is not a name that fades in the rich history of Chicago blues, despite the esoteric familiarity even with the most iconic local musicians. At 85, Drummer's vitality and love for music keep him playing and exploring the blues, proving its timeless allure.

Early Years in the Delta

Drummer's origins lie in the Mississippi Delta, specifically a small town named Alligator. Born into a musically inclined family, his foray into music began early, at the age of seven, through the church. Despite his family's reservations about the secular nature of blues, legends like B.B. King and Memphis Minnie captivated young Johnny.

The Windy City Calls

It wasn't until a move to Chicago followed by a stint in the army that Johnny Drummer's path in music would become clear. Returning to Chicago after military service, he immersed himself in the local blues scene, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters, and establishing his first band, The Starliters.

A Name on Stage

By 1962, Johnny Drummer saw his talents captured on recordings, although such sessions never surfaced publicly. His versatility in the blues scene grew, embracing roles as a drummer, harmonica player, and later on, a keytarist, an instrument not often associated with blues music.

Keytar in the Blues

It was the keytar that would eventually become Johnny's trademark. The Roland keytar allowed him to meld his love for synthesisers with the performative aspect of interacting with the audience and even simultaneously playing the harmonica.

Legacy and Recognition

Johnny Drummer's influence and footprint in the music industry are undeniable. Releasing albums well into the 2000s and embodying the essence of blues in his live performances, he continues to be a cornerstone of the genre. Even as club scenes change and tastes evolve, Johnny Drummer stands as a testament to the enduring power and heart of blues music.
