Published March 20, 2024

Manchester is gearing up for the premiere of the Northern Music Awards, where Tim Burgess, the iconic frontman of The Charlatans, will be honored. This esteemed event is set to take place at the Albert Hall on April 23, and will mark a momentous occasion for the northern music scene.

Burgess is poised to receive the exclusive Northern Music Award 2024, a distinction recognizing his contributions to music. Joining the celebrations, Lisa Stansfield and Melanie C from the Spice Girls will be presented with the Northern Icon Award and Special Recognition Award, respectively.

The night promises an exciting lineup of performances, featuring not only Stansfield but also Liam Fray of the Courteeners, indie hip hop creative Antony Szmierek, the Leeds-based group English Teacher, and Warrington’s The K’s.

Burgess expressed his elation over the accolade, highlighting the profound impact of music in connecting individuals and supporting the altruistic mission of Nordoff and Robbins' music therapy programs. Through the Northern Music Awards, they hope to extend their therapeutic reach to an even wider audience across the North.

The event is designed to shine a spotlight on the northern music industry's top artists, venues, and events. Manager of Aitch, Michael Adex, is set to receive the Industry Icon Award while The Reytons will take home the Disruptor Award.

Nominees for the Artist of the Year include Sam Fender, Louis Tomlinson, and Self Esteem, while bands like Blossoms, Courteeners, and Bring Me The Horizon are competing for the Band of the Year title. Music festivals such as Sounds of the Other City, Moovin Stockport, Beatherder Lancashire, Sheffield's Tramlines, and Kendal Calling are in the running for Festival of the Year.

Nadra Shah, from Nordoff and Robbins, emphasized the transformative power of music and its role as the organization’s heartbeat. The Northern Music Awards serves as an opportunity to honor those devoted to making live music accessible and to celebrate the vibrancy of the northern music scene.
