German Punk Icon Hails The Undertones as Pioneers

Published November 27, 2023

The legendary Derry band, The Undertones, renowned for their hit 'Teenage Kicks', has inspired countless artists across the globe, including Campino, the lead singer of Germany's esteemed punk rock group Die Toten Hosen.

Over the weekend, Campino visited Londonderry to join The Undertones on stage, an experience that not only highlighted the Northern Irish band's influence on his music but also celebrated their importance to the international punk scene.

A new mural depicting The Undertones in their younger days has been unveiled in Derry, a tribute to the band's long-lasting impact.

Guitarist Damian O'Neill of The Undertones expressed his astonishment at being honored with the mural, a sentiment he never imagined possible decades ago. The artwork, inspired by a 1970s photograph from the late Derry Journal photographer Larry Doherty, commemorates the release of 'Teenage Kicks', the band's path to fame.

Die Toten Hosen, with over 19 million records sold since their formation in 1982, have covered 'Teenage Kicks', underscoring the song's enduring resonance.

Campino recalls his youth in Dusseldorf in the '70s when he first encountered The Undertones' music. Their performance in Germany in 1979 left a profound impression on him, and he has been both a fan and friend of the band ever since.

The Undertones' approach to music was simple, free of the political undertones common in the punk scene at the time, offering a fun escape during difficult periods. According to Campino, bands like The Undertones laid the groundwork for later successful acts, including Green Day.

Reflecting on their musical journey, The Undertones members credit their creativity to ennui and acknowledge the challenges they faced early on. Despite initial pushback for their punk identity in Derry, guitarist O'Neill now appreciates the recognition they receive.

The band and their supporters have greeted the mural with enthusiasm. O'Neill shares a touching memory, citing the unwavering support of their parents, particularly during their noisy practice sessions at home. He believes that their parents would have been immensely proud of the mural's dedication.

Community Embraces The Undertones Mural

Drummer Billy Doherty and guitarist Mickey Bradley convey their gratitude for the mural, which captures a special moment in their careers. Bradley humorously notes their playful mockery of the showbiz industry captured in the original photograph, now faithfully immortalized on the wall. The positive response from Derry locals signals their affection for the band, highlighting The Undertones' cherished status in their hometown.
