Published March 20, 2024

As spring blossoms, the music scene heralds the end of the 2023-2024 subscription season with anticipated final performances from institutions like the Monterey Symphony, Carmel Music Society, and more. These concerts represent a time of joyful farewells to annual musical journeys.

Monterey Symphony Overcomes Last-Minute Hurdle

The Monterey Symphony faced an unforeseen obstacle when pianist Orli Shaham was struck with illness. However, conductor Jayce Ogren exemplified resilience, asserting 'These things happen,' and transitioned the setback into a triumph. Pianist Soyeon Kate Lee stepped in to perform Mozart, while 'Light Forming' was replaced with Wagner's 'Siegfried Idyll.' The substitute arrangement was met with admiration as Lee delivered an exceptional performance.

A Tribute to Steve Friedlander

Steve Friedlander, the Carmel Bach Festival's late executive director, is remembered fondly for his profound impact and dedication. Admired for his skillful management and love of music, he was a beacon of guidance throughout significant milestones and challenges. Having held prominent positions across the arts and finance sectors, Friedlander's wisdom and humor left a lasting legacy.

Looking Forward to the Carmel Bach Festival

Excitement builds as tickets for the 87th season of the Bach Festival, presenting a fresh lineup of performances, go on sale. The season opens with J.S. Bach's 'St. John Passion' and includes a diverse array of compositions such as Beethoven's 9th Symphony and works by Bruckner and Cage. Audiences can expect a rich blend of music from traditional Irish melodies to pieces by Grieg and Missy Mazzoli.

Early Chamber Music Delights

Before the Bach Festival, the Central Coast Chamber Choir offers an early taste of Bach and Baroque with performances of Bach's early cantatas and Buxtehude's Missa Brevis. Under Daniel Henriks's direction, the concerts promise a deeply reflective experience, exploring life's poignant questions through music.
