Gombo Nola Kitchen & Oyster Bar Hosts New Music Series with Jazz Musician Evan Arntzen

Published January 26, 2024

The vibrant culture of New Orleans is famous for its blend of food and music, and that's exactly the atmosphere John Piskor is striving to create at Gombo Nola Kitchen & Oyster Bar in Northampton. Since opening the Cajun-style eatery last year, Piskor has had the vision to transform the dining experience into one reminiscent of a New Orleans cafe, complete with live music to cap off the evening.

Launching with Jazz Flair

The musical journey begins at Gombo on Friday and Saturday nights with a line-up kicking off on February 2nd. The scheduled performances are timed to celebrate the Mardi Gras season, inviting patrons to enjoy the sounds of New Orleans jazz. Evan Arntzen, a talented clarinetist and saxophonist with a deep connection to the genre, will be the one to inaugurate this new musical venture.

A Musical Experience with Heritage

Arntzen, who found his roots in music through the early blues and jazz sounds of legends like Duke Ellington and Jelly Roll Morton, plans to deliver authentic performances at Gombo. Growing up with a jazz clarinetist grandfather, and having performed at prestigious venues and festivals throughout his career, Arntzen will bring an aura of both tradition and excellence to the series.

His performances at Gombo, spread over three dates in February, will also feature a dynamic range of other musicians, who, together with Arntzen, will fill the 50-seat venue's intimate space with unamplified and energetic sounds.

A Blend of Local and Family Talent

The music series will not only highlight Arntzen's talents but will also exhibit the skills of his ensemble members hailing from various places including New York and Connecticut. Among them is his brother, showcasing family talent on guitar and banjo. Every show promises a unique experience, tailored to the acoustics and atmosphere of Gombo.

No Cover, Just Culture

As the music plays, guests won't be charged an entrance fee but will be encouraged to enjoy a beverage or meal. This new initiative by Piskor is seen as more than an entertainment offering; it represents a stepping stone towards revitalizing Northampton's musical and economic vigor, coinciding with the anticipated reopening of prominent local venues like the Iron Horse Music Hall and the Calvin Theatre.
