Chico State's Sundays at Two Series Spotlights ‘Hard-Boiled Music’

Published March 14, 2024

Chico State’s Department of Music, Theatre and Dance presented a unique auditory experience as part of their recurring Sundays at Two series. The recent installment showcased 'Hard-Boiled Music,' an awe-inspiring ensemble of original melodies that drew influence from the gritty world of early twentieth-century hard-boiled fiction.

Inspiration from Detective Tales

Emmy-nominated composer, guitarist, and Chico State educator David Dvorin spearheaded the performance, bringing his love for hard-boiled detective novels to the stage. Accompanied by outstanding musicians, they filled Chico State’s Recital Hall with jazz and blues tones that paid homage to the sharp wit and dark alleys of the classic crime narratives.

A Blend of Music and Mystery

The musicians' craft echoed through the hall, showcasing the adaptability and excellence of the venue's acoustics. Each performance was a careful blend of improvisation and structured harmony, creating an immersive experience that transported listeners straight into the era of private eyes and cunning rogues.

Storytelling Through Song

The compositions came to life with Dvorin’s artistic storytelling, as he prefaced each piece with evocative introductions. Tunes like ‘Benny the Fink’ and ‘Flim Flam Man’ were not just songs; they were narratives set to rhythm, leading the audience through scenes filled with intriguing characters and seedy locations, enhanced by the resonant timbre of the contra-alto clarinet, the deliberate strum of a guitar, and the rich textures of a saxophone.

Looking Ahead

The Sundays at Two series promises more artistic ventures, with the next event, ‘Crossover,’ slated for March 31. It will feature the talents of Ayaho Nakamura on trumpet, performing works that will bridge classical French music with the vibrancy of jazz.
