Wolverhampton's Celebrated Music Venue Takes New Name in University Partnership

Published March 15, 2024

A historic music venue in Wolverhampton, which has witnessed legendary performances since its opening in 1938, has undergone yet another transformation. The Wolverhampton Civic Hall, now simply known as The Halls, is stepping into a new era with a fresh name thanks to a collaboration with the University of Wolverhampton.

A New Chapter for an Iconic Venue

Having played host to a who's who of the music world such as Queen, David Bowie, and The Who, The Halls is no stranger to significant moments in music history. This landmark site, which was reopened last year after a £48 million renovation, will now be known as the University of Wolverhampton at The Halls, reflecting the new partnership aimed at enriching student experience and local culture.

Education Meets Entertainment

At the core of this alliance is the emphasis on providing opportunities for students at the university, particularly in the fields of marketing and business. The educational initiative aims to offer hands-on industry experience through direct involvement with the running of the venue.

Over the decades, the stage of The Halls has been graced by a wide array of prominent acts. In its earlier history, it was a platform for classical giants such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and celebrated performances by Nat King Cole. It continued to be a pivot for musical innovation through the punk and heavy metal scenes of the '80s, right onto the Britpop era of the '90s and beyond.

Bridging Past and Future

The union of the university, which itself boasts a history spanning close to two centuries, with The Halls symbolizes a bridge between the city's cultural legacy and its academic aspirations. The initiative is anticipated to amplify the cultural and economic vitality of Wolverhampton's nightlife, providing benefits well beyond the campus.

As a part of the arrangement, pre-sale access to events at The Halls is granted 24 hours early to the staff and students of the University of Wolverhampton, further cementing the partnership between the two institutions.

Looking Ahead

The promising collaboration has garnered positive sentiments from both academic and entertainment circles. With a line-up that continues to feature a diverse range of talents, including upcoming acts such as Thundercat and The Stranglers, The Halls is set to remain at the forefront of the city's vibrant music scene.
