Silversun Pickups Embrace Risk and Evolution on Their Music Journey

Published February 7, 2024

"You can absolutely miss your moment if you're not alert," notes Brian Aubert. The Silversun Pickups' frontman emphasizes the interplay of hard work, fortune, and the courage required to leap into the unknown.

Questioning the reflex to decline opportunities, Aubert muses, "How can you judge what offers to reject if you never agree to any?"

This indie foursome is set to rock the Catalyst with their latest performance on February 10, alongside the New York-based trio Hello Mary. While still relishing their recent album, Physical Thrills, the band plans to delve into their rich musical archive for this show.

"We're shuffling through our entire song list," Aubert explains. "This tour is more about the band's essence rather than just our latest album."

Aubert has long-standing ties to Santa Cruz, a connection enhanced by his Santa Cruzan father-in-law. He shares nostalgic stories of his early days in the local music scene, which include punk shows and memorable nights spent in a band member's attic.

The Silversun Pickups' origin story defies the usual band trajectory. Aubert and future bandmate Nikki Monninger's chance meeting on a flight led to an unexpected partnership. They founded the band upon their return to LA, then were hastily thrust onto the stage, prompting them to hone their identity alongside their live audience.

The band experienced a shakeup in 2002, leading to the addition of drummer Christopher Guanlao and keyboardist Joe Lester. Since then, their sound, rooted in shoegaze, has continually expanded to embrace a diversity of musical styles.

From experimenting with electronic sounds to alternative remixes, the Silversun Pickups are no strangers to change. Their endeavours, spanning 24 years, six albums, chart-topping hits, and a Grammy nod, manifest a band that's unafraid to say 'yes' and evolve.

Their latest album, created with acclaimed producer Butch Vig, encapsulates their musical journey, juxtaposing their raw intensity with catchier tunes.

Yet, even with their offbeat path, Aubert still radiates the quintessential artist's spirit concerning future creations, revealing, "I've got ideas swirling in my head!" with a chuckle.
