Music Review: The Coal Men’s Dark Americana Eclipses the Ordinary in 'Everett'

Published March 1, 2024

The roots-rock Americana band, The Coal Men, are back with their sixth studio album, titled Everett, named after the Everett upright piano whose sounds pepper the album with a high-end sparkle amidst the bass-heavy vibrations the group is known for.

Yet at its core, The Coal Men remain a potent guitar-bass-drums trio. Lead guitarist, vocalist, and primary songwriter Dave Coleman leans into the lower ranges of his electric guitar, resulting in a smoky, distorted soundscape. Alongside him, bassist Paul Slivka weaves intricate bass lines beneath the guitar’s roar, displaying both skill and restraint. Drummer and co-founder Dave Ray completes the ensemble, ensuring the rhythms are as tight as ever.

What truly sets The Coal Men apart in the world of amplified Americana is their exceptional songwriting ability. Their work is characterized by a somber intensity that captures listeners and immerses them in the music's depths. Coleman, who also took on production duties, intentionally mixes his vocals in the backdrop, akin to the style of J.J. Cale. Despite this, his lyrics remain clear, conveying maturity and a sincerity that has not been worn away by time.

The songs themselves are alive with surprises, sporting riffs and chord progressions that carry a listener eagerly forward. The occasional burst of punk-rock flair adds a layer of diversity to the album’s tracklist. For example, in the song 'Come Back Joe,' Coleman invokes the spirit of the legendary Joe Strummer.

To truly appreciate the power and depth of Everett, it’s recommended to listen either with high-quality headphones or, preferably, through a dedicated stereo with robust speakers — a setup The Coal Men imply was once a staple for any serious music fan.

Slated for release on March 29, 2024, by Vaskaleedez Records, Everett promises to be an enriching experience for those eager to dive into its intricate soundscape. The album is currently available for pre-order.
