Artistic Community Honors Hakchon Theater with Final Performance Series

Published December 6, 2023

As Seoul's beloved Hakchon Theater approaches its last curtain call, the South Korean acting and music scene is uniting for a moving relay performance to honor the venue's legacy. Known as a cradle for the arts in the Daehangno district, Hakchon Theater has announced it will sadly shut its doors on its 33rd anniversary, March 15, due to ongoing financial struggles and the health concerns of CEO Kim Min-gi.

Final Tribute to an Iconic Venue

In the wake of the closure announcement, singer Park Hak-ki rallied the artistic community to craft the 'Hakchon Again' project, a series of relay performances. The event will showcase at Hakchon Blue Theater in Jongno-gu from February 28 until the theater's closing day, celebrating with plays such as 'Red Pepper Tteokbokki' from January 12 to February 24.

Galaxy of Artists Gather in Support

A press conference witnessed a constellation of stars - actors Sol Kyung-gu, Jang Hyun-sung, Bae Hae-sun, Bang Eun-jin, and musicians like Kim Hyeong-seok and members of bands such as Crying Nut, Yurisangja, and Travel Sketch. The artists assembled to show solidarity with CEO Kim and to reflect on Hakchon's impact on their careers.

The Legacy of Hakchon and Kim Min-gi

The theater, spearheaded by founder Kim Min-gi—a notable singer-songwriter in his own right—has been a significant site in Korean performing arts history, bringing to life small theater musicals with live bands and launching the careers of many famous artists.

Artists' Reflections

Celebrating this end of an era, artists shared personal anecdotes, expressing deep gratitude for the opportunities Hakchon provided in their formative years. Contributions from the 'Hakchon Again' project will support the theater financially and aim to preserve its spirit for future generations.
