Music Festival Joy Interrupted by Rocket Attack in Israel

Published February 19, 2024

In the fall season of last year, on an October day filled with the promise of musical celebration, 23-year-old Matan Boltax found his joy cut short by the harsh realities of conflict. The music festival he was attending, vibrant and full of life, located within close proximity to the Gaza Strip, turned from a place of festivity to one of fear as rockets began to fall.

The Sudden End of Celebration

Boltax and his friends, caught in the midst of taking selfies and basking in the festival atmosphere, were forced to confront a sudden and violent disruption to their day. "We knew the festival was over, and the music wasn’t going to go back on," Boltax recounted during an emotional recount of the events at Wick Hotel in Hudson. The rockets signaled an abrupt end to the festivities and left everyone feeling despondent.

Chaos Amidst Rocket Fire

The aftermath of the rocket barrage was chaos. Cars were left abandoned as terror struck, causing casualties across the country. Boltax, an Israeli Defense Forces veteran, navigated through the disorder, finding shelter and safety for himself and those with him. It was a test of resilience and calm as they repeatedly sought refuge, even amid the challenges of comforting an individual they had picked up who was severely traumatized.

Return to Safety and Uncertainty

After enduring hours of tension and fear, Boltax was able to return to the safety of his family home by evening. The day's events were shrouded in confusion, with even news outlets struggling to provide accurate reports amidst the unfolding crisis. In the shadow of the attack, Boltax learned of brave acts of survival and resistance, along with instances of capture, from others he knew.

A Call to Defend

With the nation reeling from the attack, Boltax stepped back into his role as a reservist, joining the effort to defend Israel. His story is one of many as the Israeli people persevere in unity against the ongoing conflict with Hamas. Boltax now shares his harrowing experience of that day, contributing to the narrative of resilience that has emerged since the events of October 7, 2023.
