Cynthia Erivo on Her Oscar Nomination for 'Wicked'
Cynthia Erivo was overjoyed and emotional when she learned about her Best Actress nomination for her role as Elphaba in Wicked. While on her way to Sundance, where she received the festival’s Visionary Award, Erivo was so moved that a flight attendant noticed her tears and offered her tissues. "It’s fine," she joked, saying, "I’ve got happy tears." This nomination is part of the excitement surrounding Wicked, which earned a total of ten nominations, including a Best Supporting Actress nomination for co-star Ariana Grande.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman with green skin and magical abilities. Her journey intersects with Glinda, a popular girl who longs for magic, leading to a rivalry that becomes a deep friendship.
Celebrating Success
Since its release in November, Wicked has grossed nearly $710 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing movie musical. With a sequel titled Wicked: For Good anticipated for a similar release next November, fans can look forward to more enchanting stories. Producer Marc Platt, also nominated for Best Picture for Wicked, shared his thoughts on the film’s charm. "The film transports audiences to a familiar yet unexpected journey, where they can laugh, cry, and find joy in the lives of these characters. Seeing strong, complex women on screen as they embrace their differences is incredibly empowering," he stated.
He further emphasized that the film's success stems from the teamwork involved both in front of and behind the camera. With strong performances from Erivo and Grande, and Chu's vision, Wicked has become a cultural phenomenon that resonates deeply with audiences.
Erivo Reflects on Her Journey
In an interview, Erivo discussed her feelings about her nomination, saying, "I don’t really know how to process this. The whole thing is madness and amazing... I'm just really pleased; it's so cool." She acknowledged that the last couple of years have been transformative, feeling grounded and grateful due to the support of her team and friends. "It feels like everything I've worked for is now bearing fruit," she expressed.
Erivo has not only made her mark as Elphaba but has also become a symbol of inspiration, especially for LGBTQ+ individuals and Black women. When asked about this recognition, she noted, "I am aware of the responsibility that brings, and I hope to rise to that occasion. It's touching and meaningful to be a voice for so many people."
Looking Ahead
When discussing her past, Erivo recalled her determination to pursue a career in the arts. "I didn’t have a blueprint... It was a series of small moments and mentorships that led me here, and I am glad I stuck with it," she reflected.
She also teased an original song she co-wrote with Stephen Schwartz for Wicked: For Good, describing it as a passionate piece that blends themes of yearning and emotion. In addition to her work in Wicked, Erivo is excited about her upcoming episode on the series Poker Face, claiming it will be unlike anything she has done before and full of surprises.
Finally, Erivo expressed her excitement about joining the cast of Children of Blood and Bone, relishing the chance to work with Gina Prince-Bythewood and stepping into a role unlike any she’s portrayed previously. The 97th Oscars will be broadcast live on March 2, hosted by Conan O’Brien.
