(CNN) — Mikaela Dee spent much of her childhood in a hospital bed. Dee faced chronic illness, which led her family to homeschool her. Her friendships dwindled, with most of her interactions limited to doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and her parents.

However, her life took a turn when she was 15, after discovering One Direction on "The X-Factor UK." The five teenage boys, with their floppy hair and vibrant performances, became a source of joy and companionship for her. Dee felt inspired by their humor and kindness, creating an Instagram fan account that helped her connect with other fans across the nation. Through the band, she found a sense of belonging.

Since going on an indefinite hiatus in 2016, One Direction hasn’t performed together for nearly a decade, leaving their fans to grow up alongside their music. Recently, the news of Liam Payne's tragic death at the age of 31 in Argentina shocked many, including Dee, who expressed that it felt like "the walls close in" after hearing about his passing.

Payne played a significant role in the lives of those who loved One Direction. Joe Azar, 28, has been a fan since he was 14 and runs a popular X account, 1D Alert, dedicated to band updates. Azar described the band as his "happy place" during challenging times, stating that his heart felt shattered when he heard of the unfortunate news.

The fans, affectionately called Directioners, are known for their passionate support, which sometimes led to wild actions, like a fan breaking into Payne's hotel room in 2013. Despite their intense dedication, the fans also contributed to shaping the online culture of the 2010s, forming close-knit communities through platforms like X, Instagram, and Tumblr.

Payne's death marks a painful moment for many of these fans. Some have drawn parallels to the grief felt when other iconic musicians passed away, like John Lennon. The communal mourning witnessed over the weekend and online reflects how deeply intertwined their lives were with Payne and the band.

Online tributes flooded in as fans reconnect with old friends and memories. Rafy Evans, 27, organized a meetup in Los Angeles where fans gathered to remember and grieve. They shared stories and experiences bonded by their love for One Direction.

Maya Minich, 28, who found solace in One Direction during her teenage years, described last week’s news as a blow not just as an adult, but to her childhood self. The impact of the band was profound, as they provided companionship and joy during crucial years of her development.

In this season of mourning, fans are not just grieving the loss of a celebrity but also the experiences they shared and the childhood memories that the band represented. This new chapter, marked by the absence of Payne, serves as a reminder of the bittersweet connection they had with One Direction and with each other.
