Calgary's Beloved Blues Can Set to Close to Make Way for Condos
The iconic Blues Can in Inglewood, a beloved live music hotspot known for its intimate barroom ambiance and quality sound, is nearing the end of its era with the land slated for condo development. Greg Smith, the owner of Blues Can since its inception in 2010, revealed that the building's days are numbered, as signs have gone up indicating the landowner's plans to build condos on the site.
A Favourite Venue Drawing Its Curtain
While Blues Can has commanded a strong following among Calgary's music lovers and served as a significant platform for artists to establish their careers, Smith anticipates the venue's last show to be sometime in the fall of 2024. Musicians have been known to perform at the Blues Can for less due to the prestige associated with playing at the venue.
The Impact on Calgary's Music Scene
The closure of the Blues Can isn't just about one venue shutting its doors; it represents a substantial loss to the city's music milieu. It's strategically located at the eastern fringe of Calgary's Music Mile, contributing to the area's cultural richness with over 600 shows annually. Losing such a cornerstone is deemed a substantial blow to the local music scene.
Artists like Tom Phillips, who has a regular gig at the Blues Can, express a deep fondness for the sound and atmosphere that the venue offers. Rob Skeet, president of the Music Mile, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the Blues Can's crucial role in nurturing up-and-coming musicians and hosting a variety of acts.
A Hopeful Future Beyond the Wrecking Ball
Despite the looming end, Smith remains steadfast, vowing to continue the Blues Can legacy by seeking a new location to recreate the unique experience it offers. However, finding a spot that accommodates the venue's distinct needs is challenging. Smith has promised the community of musicians, patrons, and staff that he will exhaust all avenues to ensure the Blues Can finds a new home.
Until the move is necessary, Smith is hopeful to keep the doors open at least through October 1 of this year, aiming to celebrate the Blues Can's 14th anniversary with a final hurrah.
