Shawn Mendes Opens Up About His Sexuality During Concert

Published October 29, 2024

Shawn Mendes recently spoke about his sexuality during a concert on Monday, addressing ongoing speculation and sharing his personal journey. The performance took place at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, part of his For Friends and Family Only tour. His candid remarks have since gained attention on social media, particularly on TikTok.

As the 26-year-old singer prepared to perform his new song "The Mountain," he took a moment to reflect on his experiences. Mendes shared, "I was really young when I started. I was 15 years old. The truth is that I didn’t get to do a lot of 15-year-old things and discover parts of myself that you do at 15."

Mendes conveyed that he is currently in the process of understanding his own sexuality. He remarked that sexuality is a "beautifully complex thing" and emphasized the difficulty of categorizing it. He noted, "People have been talking about my sexuality for so long... since I was really young. It always felt like such an intrusion on something very personal to me, something that I was figuring out in myself and still have yet to discover it."

Continuing his honest conversation, Mendes said, "I don’t really know sometimes and I know other times." He added that he wanted to express his thoughts freely, allowing him to be more authentic with his audience. He concluded, "The real truth about my life and my sexuality is that, man, I’m just figuring it out like everyone. And I don’t really know sometimes and I know other times. This can be really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that."

Mendes has addressed his sexuality previously. Back in 2018, he talked about feeling pressure to prove he wasn’t gay, even though he acknowledged that being gay is not a bad thing at all. He stated, "I feel like I need to go be seen with someone — like a girl — in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay." The next year, he described the rumors as "hurtful" and indicated they made him feel uncomfortable.

Throughout the years, Mendes has openly discussed his personal struggles related to his identity, including how his voice and mannerisms have been perceived. He previously admitted to feeling affected by the way he presented himself, even sharing that he often found himself adopting a more feminine posture. In a testament to his ongoing exploration, he sings in "The Mountain" that fans can "say he likes girls or boys, whatever fits your mold." This statement seems to reinforce his acknowledgment of the complexities surrounding identity and attraction.

With these reflections, Mendes has once again reminded fans that figuring out one’s identity is a continuous and personal journey.
