R&B Pioneer Wheesung Passes Away at 43
Singer Wheesung, a prominent figure in the Korean R&B scene, was found unresponsive in his home in the Gwangjin District of Seoul on Monday. He was 43 years old. Emergency services were alerted after his mother discovered him, and he was later pronounced dead.
His agency, Tajoy Entertainment, confirmed his passing in a statement, revealing he was found in cardiac arrest. They expressed their condolences while confirming the circumstances of his death. Another statement indicated that funeral arrangements would be made privately, in accordance with his family's wishes.
Police have announced plans to request an autopsy from the National Forensic Service to determine the exact cause of death. They confirmed there were no signs of forced entry or foul play at the scene.
Wheesung, whose real name was Choi Whee-sung and who also performed under the name Realslow, made a significant impact on the Korean music industry. He was known for his soulful R&B ballads, which showcased powerful vocals and emotional storytelling.
He first debuted in 1999 with the music group A4 but launched his solo career in 2002 with his first album, "Like a Movie." His debut song, "Can't You," quickly gained popularity, securing him a place in the music industry and topping local music charts.
Throughout his career, Wheesung released several hits, including "With Me," "Insomnia," and "Even Thought of Marriage," which further solidified his status as one of Korea's leading R&B artists.
An accomplished songwriter, Wheesung penned lyrics for other popular K-pop songs, including Younha's "Password 486," G.NA's "I'll Get Lost, You Go Your Way," and TWICE's "Dance the Night Away." He also produced music for other artists, including Ailee, who debuted with a single he produced.
Wheesung's career, however, was marked by legal and personal struggles. He faced investigations related to substance use, including propofol, during and after his military service. He was eventually indicted for habitual use of the drug and received a suspended prison sentence along with a hefty fine.
In addition to these legal issues, Wheesung had been open about his battles with mental health, including depression, panic disorders, and insomnia. His mental health challenges sparked public concern.
Wheesung remained active in the music scene until his death and was scheduled to perform at a concert later that week. The event has since been canceled in light of his passing.
