Published January 6, 2025

The Palm Springs International Film Festival has begun its fifth day, showcasing a variety of special film screenings and notable guest appearances. Attendees are eagerly anticipating the upcoming announcement of the juried awards that will take place later this week.

On Monday morning, the festival featured screenings of two remarkable films. One of the highlights was "Nickle Boys," based on Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. This film dives deep into the unsettling experiences of two boys in an abusive reform school during the Jim Crow era in Florida. Another film showcased was "Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story," which presents a light-hearted look at the life of the beloved entertainer, Liza Minnelli.

Engaging Discussions with Filmmakers

The festival continues its "Books to Screen" series, bringing in filmmakers and creative talents for discussions. On Monday at 6 p.m., screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes will share insights on Luca Guadagnino's adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novella, featuring Daniel Craig. Kuritzkes also wrote the screenplay for Guadagnino's other film, "Challengers," which recently earned the Best Score - Motion Picture award at the Golden Globes.

Celebrating Emerging Talent

Recently, a group of emerging filmmakers was honored at Variety's Creative Impact Awards during the "10 Directors to Watch" event. Among those recognized were Coralie Fargeat with "The Substance," Malcolm Washington with "The Piano Lesson," and Halina Reijn with "Babygirl." Other talented filmmakers in this spotlight include Durga Chew-Bose, David Fortune, Drew Hancock, Zoe Kravitz, Tom Nesher, James Sweeney, and Magnus von Horn.

Notably, past honorees include acclaimed directors such as Wes Anderson, Alfonso Cuarón, Christopher Nolan, Chloé Zhao, and Taika Waititi. Cord Jefferson, a recent recipient from the previous class, won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar at the 2024 ceremony for "American Fiction."

Acknowledging Established Artists

The event also celebrated established artists like Cynthia Erivo, who won the Creative Impact in Acting award for her role in "Wicked," and Jacques Audiard, awarded for Creative Impact in Directing for "Emilia Pérez." Both stars participated in special screenings as part of the festival's "Talking Pictures" series. Audiard attended an 11 a.m. showing with four Vanguard Award-winning cast members, while Erivo introduced "Wicked" with her co-star Ariana Grande and director Jon M. Chu before a 1 p.m. screening of the musical adaptation at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. Grande was recently awarded the Rising Star Award at Friday's ceremony.

During the festival, notable directors such as Edward Berger, known for "Conclave," attended screenings sharing insights into their work. Additionally, Eran Riklis, the director of "Reading Lolita in Tehran," along with author Azar Naifisi and screenwriter Marjorie David, graced the North American premiere with their presence.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival will continue its exciting lineup of events through next week, culminating in the announcement of the juried awards on January 12. For more details about the films being screened, visit their official website.
