Acoustic Evening Event Fosters Unity Between University and Local Community Through Music

Published February 5, 2024

In Syracuse, a unique gathering called the Acoustic Evening concert took place on February 1, hosted by the CrossRoads Collective at the Town Shop Youth Center in Camillus. The intimate third-floor setting was transformed into a homey atmosphere filled with homestyle decor and the smooth sounds of R&B artist Tyjhier Goodman, enchanting attendees with an ambient vibe.

Uniting Through Music and Creativity

The purpose of the event was to create a bridge between the communities of Syracuse University and the city of Syracuse. A mix of local artists and university students performed, including Jack Stinziano who shared an acoustic set—the synergy of university musicians and local talent was a significant moment for Stinziano, who noted the importance of connection between the two communities.

Building More Than Just Musical Bridges

With an audience comprising of both university goers and local residents, the CrossRoads Collective sought to make a difference. The event not only provided an engaging musical experience but also resulted in raising $500 for Food Access Healthy Neighborhoods Now (FAHNN), a local initiative offering affordable, fresh food markets to residents.

The collective operates through two main projects: one addressing local food supply issues and the other providing music lessons to the youth. The event demonstrated the profound universality of food and music as mediums for bonding and cultural expression, as stated by Annie Knobloch from the collective's restock project.

Previous attempts at similar community-centric events proved challenging, but this year's success has given members like Sam Parrish, president of the collective, and vice president Anjali Engstrom new hope in educating and empowering students about the significance of community engagement without taking on a 'savior' role.

A Family Gathering of Creatives

As the music played, the youth center's regulars mingled with new faces, creating an environment comparable to a large family gathering. The essence of the evening was perfectly captured by a description of it feeling like 'a bunch of relatives I’ve never met,' hinting at the sense of comfort and celebration that permeated the space.
