Winfield Middle School Band to Host Tribute Concert for Slain Classmate Koda Jarrett

Published February 13, 2024

On Tuesday evening, the Winfield Middle School Band is set to perform a heartfelt tribute concert to commemorate Koda Jarrett, a 14-year-old former band member and student who was the victim of a shooting last week. The event is aimed at honoring his memory and will take place at 7 p.m. on the school's football field, right after a basketball game that's scheduled for the same day.

Remembering Koda Jarrett

The music program at Winfield Middle School, along with its director John Shawler, feels the deep loss of Jarrett, who was a cherished member of the band. Shawler expresses that the evening's concert will serve as a way to cherish Jarrett's life, remembering him for the joy, laughter, and music he brought to the school.

A Life Celebrated Through Music

Koda Jarrett, who played the trombone since sixth grade, was recognized for his passionate contribution to all facets of the school's music program, which included marching band, pep band, jazz band, and a group called 'Christmas Cheer' that performed carols at nursing homes. The upcoming concert will reflect his vibrant spirit and will be attended by members of the Winfield High School Band who also knew Koda.

In Memory of a Young Musician

In honor of Koda's memory, an empty seat will be reserved in the band room with a special cover adorned with his name, made by his mother. Shawler emphasizes Koda's positive influence and potential, noting the tragedy of his life being cut short. He also shared that Koda aspired to be a pilot one day.

A Community in Mourning

The loss of Koda and his mother, Alisha Carnafix, murdered in their home on the morning of February 6, 2024, has deeply affected the community. The alleged perpetrator, Markus Guy, has been charged with their murders. As the community grapples with this tragic event, the tribute concert stands as a testament to Koda's lasting impact on those around him.
