The Rise of Female DJs in the Music Industry

Published January 23, 2024

In Mbabane, the presence of female DJs in the music scene is on the rise, reshaping and diversifying the soundscape of dance music. The event 'City girls R Up' at Solani's Shisanyama has been instrumental in showcasing this trend, receiving accolades from established male DJs and attendees alike. Last Saturday, South African sensation Mawhoo headlined the event, with a strong lineup of talented local female DJs such as DJ Expo, Black Pearl, Itsallblaq, Ash, Lady Zee, Belinda Chester, and Zoleka providing support.

Empowerment Through Representation

Award-winning DJ Matamza lauded the female DJs' impressive growth in the scene. He underscored that their contributions are not only breaking down traditional barriers but also inspiring and empowering other women in the music industry. The unique experiences and sounds these women bring are enriching the dance music culture significantly.

Industry Shift Toward Equality

According to Chantal Dlamini, the Brand and Marketing Manager at Solani's Shisanyama, the rationale behind exclusively featuring female DJs was to empower them in a traditionally male-dominated field. Their efforts have been met with positive public reception, indicating a shift towards equality in the industry.

As a part of the 'City Girls R Up' show, Lady Zee echoed the sentiment of empowerment among female DJs. Her own journey began at the young age of 19, specializing in Deep House, commercial music, and Amapiano. Lady Zee's career has taken her to prominent events such as the MTN Bushfire Festival and sessions in Mozambique, establishing herself as a significant figure in the rise of female DJs.
