Chicago Psych Fest Revels in Eclectic and Energetic Sonic Experiences

Published February 16, 2024

The Chicago Psych Fest stands as a beacon for fans of unconventional and high-volume music, uniting a plethora of sounds under the banner of psychedelia. This event is not just a festival, but a communal experience, celebrating its 14th year of musical exploration and discovery. At the heart of this festival is the love for the weird and the wonderful, gathering attendees in the immersive atmosphere of the Hideout.

Loud and Peculiar Kickoff Night

The inaugural night of the festival was led by the vibrant Cabeza de Chivo, a local group producing a fusion of tropical and psychedelic music. Their performance, characterized by robust Latin rhythms, promises an experience that stimulates both the feet and the mind. In addition, stalwarts like Plastic Crimewave Syndicate took the stage, featuring the multi-faceted artist Steve Krakow and saxophonist Mac Blackout. The evening was further amplified by Satin Banshee's heavy riffs and the multi-genre ensemble Free Times, all of whom contributed to the festival's eclectic opening night.

Exploring Sonic Landscapes on Night Two

The second evening continued the auditory journey with Who Is the Witness? headlining, comprised of notable local musicians and the jazz virtuoso Joshua Abrams. This night also allowed the audience to delve into tranquil soundscapes with Jake Acosta, wander through Erik Kramer's ambient droning, and engage with the innovative Omit/Transmit Orchestra. With DJ sets from Psychedalex and Sara Gossett each evening, the festival ensured a continuous flow of music, providing a full-spectrum psychedelic experience.
