Shelter Island Community Events Calendar: December 2024

The following schedule outlines the weekly events available for the Shelter Island community.

Weekly Activities

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Meetings: Join the Keep It Simple & Early Birds meeting in person at 7 a.m. from Monday to Friday. Additional meetings are held on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church.

Adult Basketball: Open play is available on Sundays at 11 a.m. and Mondays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. at the Shelter Island School. This event is free and welcomes drop-ins.

Adult Soccer: Join us for free, drop-in adult soccer every Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Shelter Island School.

Adult Volleyball: Participate in Wednesday night volleyball at 8 p.m. at the Shelter Island School. This is also a free event.

Fitness Classes: Classes such as Alignment & Base with Callie will be held on Wednesdays at 9 a.m. at the Community Center. CoreSyn with Trent takes place on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 8 a.m. at the Community Center. Yoga with Dawn is scheduled for Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., Thursdays at 5 p.m., and Sundays at 8 a.m. Zumba Gold with Susan will be on Mondays and Fridays at 9 a.m. and Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. All Community Center classes cost $10 each.

Library Programs: The Art/Rich Poetry Roundtable takes place every Tuesday at 4 p.m. with both in-person and Zoom attendance options. Intermediate French Conversation sessions occur Thursdays at 11 a.m., requiring registration at silibrary.org. A Knitting Group meets Thursdays at 4:30 p.m.

Senior Center Programs

Seniors can join the Care Giver Support Group (call 631-749-1059 for information) and participate in Chair Yoga with Jean Lawless on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Registration is needed for many programs, such as Mah-Jongg, which meets Mondays and Fridays from 1-4 p.m.

Children’s Programs

Thursday, December 5: Dungeons and Dragons sessions for ages 9-11 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the Library. Interested participants can sign up with Sara.

Friday, December 6: Tot Play Group from 3:30-4:30 p.m. for ages 0-4 at the Community Center. This event does not require registration.

Saturday, December 7: Another Dungeons and Dragons session for older grades runs from 1-3 p.m. at the Library.

Community Events

Several events are highlighted this month including the Sylvester Manor Windmill Lighting on December 6 at 4 p.m. and the St. Nicholas Fair on December 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church. For a festive gathering, the Chase Creek Tree Lighting is on December 8 at 4:30 p.m. All are welcome to participate in these community events.

Town Meetings

Upcoming town meetings include the WQIAB meeting on December 5 from 6-7 p.m. and the West Neck Water District Board meeting on December 6 from 2-3 p.m. There are also various scheduled sessions next week covering advisory boards and community housing discussions.
