Published February 6, 2024

The Seventh Street Underground was abuzz with energy as Eastern students stepped into the spotlight during lunchbox voodoo's open mic night. A mix of stand-up comedy and musical acts filled the venue with laughter and melodies, showcasing the diverse talents of participating students. The event not only provided a platform for performers but proved to be a testament to the supportive community at Eastern.

A Diverse Array of Performances

Lunchbox voodoo, an organization established in 2003, creates opportunities for Eastern students and faculty alike to enjoy performances ranging from comedic skits to acoustic serenades. The group enjoys a status of encouraging creativity and inclusiveness in their open mic events, allowing for an array of personal expression.

Jordan Gomez, a senior psychology major and treasurer of lunchbox voodoo, takes delight in the power of laughter. Through storytelling, Gomez aims to spread joy amongst the audience. He appreciates the relaxed atmosphere of the open mic, which cultivates a fun, pressure-free experience for all who take the stage.

Freshman theater major Trendan Campbell finds freedom in the spotlight, using music as a tool to reveal more personal facets of his character. He praised the welcoming nature of the student audience and hinted at a budding interest in exploring stand-up comedy, pushing his boundaries during his college journey.

Cultivating Community Through Comedy and Music

Cassius Burks, a senior digital media technology major and secretary of lunchbox voodoo, brought humor to the event. Burks is eager to see the organization foster connections within the school's community despite its lower profile compared to other student groups. He aspires for inclusivity, inviting everyone to share their unique abilities at the open mic.

With plans to host additional open mic nights monthly throughout the school year, lunchbox voodoo is dedicated to attracting an ever-growing audience. The organization is keen on establishing a consistent celebration of student talents in a convivial environment.
