Elton John Reveals Vision Loss Affects His New Musical
LONDON — Elton John has shared that it has been challenging for him to see his new musical due to losing vision in one eye after an infection.
The renowned singer-songwriter attended the opening night of "The Devil Wears Prada" in London on Sunday. He expressed to the audience, "I haven’t been able to attend many previews because, as you know, I have lost my vision."
He added, "So, it is difficult for me to see it, but I love to listen to it, and wow, it sounded great tonight."
At 77 years old, John announced in September that an infection had left him with "limited vision in one eye.” He wrote on Instagram saying, "I am healing, but it is an extremely slow process and will take some time before my vision returns in the affected eye."
John composed the score for "The Devil Wears Prada," a musical adapted from the 2006 film that follows a young journalist navigating the glamorous and egotistical world of a leading fashion magazine.
The show, taking place at the Dominion Theatre in London, stars Vanessa Williams as the formidable editor Miranda Priestly, a role famously played by Meryl Streep in the movie.
The gala performance on Sunday was a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and was attended by various celebrities and fashion industry figures, including designer Donatella Versace and former Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who is rumored to have inspired the character of Priestly.
Wintour described the musical as "entertaining."
