Laura Jane Grace Rocks on with Intimate Album Release Shows
Known for her heartfelt and unguarded music, Laura Jane Grace has often connected deeply with fans through her personal journey and vibrant punk roots. Famous as the leader of Against Me! and the Devouring Mothers, and recognized for her solo projects, Grace has become a punk icon and a voice for the transgender community. Her transformation was extensively shared in her 2014 documentary series True Trans With Laura Jane Grace, as well as her 2016 autobiography Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock’s Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout, co-written with Dan Ozzi.
The COVID-19 pandemic restrictions led Grace to record her solo debut, Stay Alive, working with renowned producer Steve Albini. Her latest album Hole in My Head, infused with elements of country, rockabilly, folk, and acoustic punk, was created at Native Sound in Saint Louis. The lyrics weave through the complexities of dysphoria, shame, the scars of the past, and mortality, all with a poetic grace and raw honesty only she can deliver.
The album's tracks, such as Dysphoria Hoodie and Birds Talk Too, are piercingly direct, while songs like Punk Rock in Basements and Keep Your Wheels Straight display her pride in punk heritage. With the title track Hole in My Head and I'm Not a Cop, she captures a ferocity that resonates in any live venue.
Grace's recent two-night album celebration at the Sleeping Village showcased her dynamic range, with supporting acts like the solo performance of Deanna Belos from Sincere Engineer and the dream-pop melodies of CalicoLoco. These shows were a testament to her enduring influence and ability to engage with her audience in a personal and significant way.
