Melbourne May Play Host to ABBA's High-Tech Virtual Concert 'ABBA Voyage'

Published December 17, 2023

The revolutionary 3D virtual concert 'ABBA Voyage', featuring digitized avatars of the iconic Swedish band ABBA, could potentially find a new stage in Melbourne. After Sydney declined the opportunity, the Victorian government has entered into advanced discussions with the show's producers. The elaborate holographic performance, which debuted in London, requires a specially constructed venue to accommodate its high-tech sound and light show.

Scouting for a New Venue

Michael Bolingbroke, CEO and executive producer of 'ABBA Voyage', has been spotted scouting locations in Melbourne. The production team has already met with Australian promoter Paul Dainty of TEG Dainty, as well as other key stakeholders including state authorities and tourism officials.

Financial Stakes and Negotiations

Staging 'ABBA Voyage' is a costly venture, with the price tag for the concert reaching around $80 million. This covers the construction of an auditorium and the installation of LED screens necessary for the elaborate visual experience. The financial burden is expected to be shared among Visit Victoria, the state government's major events company, ABBA Voyage, TEG, and potential local investors.

The Economic Impact and Potential Benefits

The economic impact of hosting such an event is significant. A similar proposal in New South Wales estimated it could attract over 2 million out-of-state visitors and stimulate billions in visitor spending. Despite previously outbidding Victoria for the premiere of the hit musical 'Hamilton', NSW declined to host 'ABBA Voyage', leaving Melbourne as the frontrunner.

Global Success and Future Plans

'ABBA Voyage' has set audience records since its London premiere, selling out shows weekly and generating substantial revenue. The concert has proven to be both a critical and financial success, leading to plans for expansion beyond the UK. With a 3000-seat arena regularly at full capacity, the producers have their sights set on the international market, looking to replicate this success abroad.
