Doechii made history at the 2025 Grammy Awards by becoming the third woman to win the prestigious Best Rap Album award.

The artist, born Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, gained fame on TikTok with her viral hit "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake" in 2021. Following her rise, she became the first female rapper to sign with Top Dawg Entertainment, and now she has added Grammy Award winner to her list of accomplishments.

During her acceptance speech, Doechii noted the significance of her win. "This category was introduced in 1989, and only two women have won until now," she exclaimed. "Three women have won! Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and Doechii." Cardi B herself presented the award to Doechii.

In her heartfelt speech, Doechii expressed deep gratitude for her win. "I’ve put my heart and soul into this mixtape. I bared my life. I went through so much, I dedicated myself to sobriety, and God told me that I would be rewarded and that He would show me just how good it can get," she shared. She also thanked her mother for her support, saying, "My beautiful mother for coaching me... My fans to the swamp."

Continuing her speech, Doechii emphasized her roots. "There’s so much culture in Tampa," she said, referring to her hometown. "Whenever people think about Florida, they only think about Miami. But Tampa has so much talent. Labels go to Tampa. There’s talent there."

Importantly, she addressed Black women around the world, saying, "The last thing I want to say... I know that there are some Black girls out there—so many Black women out there—watching me right now. I want to tell you, you can do it. Anything is possible. Don’t allow anyone to project any stereotypes on you that tell you that you can’t be here, that you’re too dark, or that you’re not smart enough, or that you’re too dramatic or too loud. You are exactly who you need to be right where you are, and I am a testimony!"

Shortly after her historic win, Doechii performed on stage, delivering a stunning performance that left rock stars, rappers, and pop singers in awe. Billie Eilish was captured on camera mouthing, "Oh my god" in response to her performance.
