Shawn Mendes Discusses His Fears of Drug Addiction

Published November 1, 2024

Shawn Mendes has opened up about his fears regarding drug addiction in a recent interview. The 26-year-old singer took precautionary measures to prevent himself from falling into that habit.

Before he ended his 2022 tour, Mendes was frequently smoking and drinking. In an interview with the New York Times, he admitted that he found himself consuming alcohol and smoking cigarettes, particularly before his concerts.

Reflecting on these experiences, Mendes realized that he needed to make significant changes to his lifestyle to avoid a potential downward spiral into addiction.

The There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back star is preparing for the release of his new album, titled Shawn, which is set to come out on November 15. He acknowledged that he was at risk of heading down a dark path related to drinking and drugs.

Mendes expressed awareness of how addiction has affected the lives of many artists before him, making it a serious concern in his own life.

His honest discussion about drug and alcohol issues comes shortly after he spoke openly about his romantic orientation. During an appearance at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, he mentioned that he is still on a journey of self-discovery, particularly amidst ongoing rumors regarding his sexuality.

"It always felt like such an invasion of something very personal to me," Mendes said. He elaborated, "It is something that I was exploring within myself, something that I am still figuring out."
